Frequently Asked Questions

Below you’ll find answers to our most frequently asked questions about W-2s.

For definitions to common terms, please review our terms and definitions page.

W-2s will be available online at myADP.com on or before January 31, 2024.

Yes. W-2s are defaulted to a paper option. Individual Providers (IPs) must opt out of the paper option through ADP if they only want to access electronically.

Box 1 on the IP’s W-2 may be less than the total wages on their last year-end pay stub. This is because some deductions are exempt from all taxes and reduce their overall reported wages.

If the IP claimed a Difficulty of Care exemption (IRS Notice 2014-7) during their hiring with Consumer Direct Care Network Washington (CDWA), this means:
• Taxes are not withheld from personal care and relief care hours and will not be reported as wages in Box 1.
• Taxes are still withheld and reported in Box 1 for respite, PTO, training, and admin time unless the IP also claimed exempt on their W-4 withholdings or had other pre-tax deductions.

Mileage is a reimbursement and is not considered taxable income. Mileage is not reported on the IP’s W-2.

CDWA follows IRS guidelines on how to report Difficulty of Care exemptions. You can find more information on the IRS website.
The DSHS website also has more information about Difficulty of Care wages being excludable from income.

No. Due to the confidential nature of this information, we cannot provide figures over the telephone.

Wages are reported when they are paid, rather than when they are earned. Wages earned in December but paid in January will be reported on the W‐2 for the next year.

CDWA cannot tell you how many exemptions to claim. You may want to consult a tax professional to determine the filing status and exemptions that are best for you.

The amount of taxes withheld from your paycheck depends on several factors, such as gross pay, filing status (married or single), number of allowances claimed, and types of deductions. If you believe the amount of taxes withheld from your checks is not correct, you may want to contact a professional tax advisor to determine what filing status is best for you. Everyone’s situation is different, and we cannot provide advice about your tax filing status. If you need to change your filing status for next year, please change your W‐4 withholdings in Workday.

IPs providing domestic services, such as personal assistance, may be exempt from paying certain federal and state taxes based on the IP’s age, student status, or family relationship to the employer. In some cases, the IP may also be exempt based on their employer’s status. If the IP qualifies for these tax exemptions, they must be taken.

The IP completes a Difficulty of Care/live-in attestation as part of their employment hiring documents. If the IP attested to meeting one of the qualifying conditions, CDWA will process taxes based on this information.

No, IPs must update their W-4 withholding to exempt each year. This typically must be done no later than February of each year. Use this guide for instructions on how to update through Workday. Please do not send a paper W-4.

You may receive two W‐2s if you worked for multiple employers. The employer is identified in Box C.
